Project Milestone

Fort Myers CRA Junkyard Closure Marks Key Franklin Park Site Milestone

December 2024

CRA announcements documented the closure of long-standing junkyard operations in the Dr. MLK redevelopment area near Franklin Park Elementary.

Residential neighborhood street and homes

The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency announced in December 2024 that junkyard operations had ceased at 3312 Edison Avenue and 2419 Henderson Avenue in the Dr. MLK redevelopment area.

The milestone followed a September 2024 CRA action that committed a $1.55 million contribution in aid toward the purchase and closure of the business, contingent on sale to Megen Construction Company, Inc.

CRA materials describe the closure as part of Action Step #13 in the 2018 Dr. MLK & VSSB Revitalization Plan, which called for the removal of junkyard uses near Franklin Park Elementary and redevelopment of the land for housing.

For Reserve at Franklin Park, the public milestone is important context: the planned affordable housing community is tied to a broader neighborhood reinvestment effort in Dunbar, replacing a blighted use with family-sized affordable homes and resident amenities.

Final construction timing, financing status, and operating details should be confirmed through project-specific updates as the development advances.
