Resident Amenities in Affordable Housing Should Be Useful, Durable, and Easy to Operate
November 2024
Amenities should support everyday life and long-term operations, not simply fill a checklist.

In affordable housing, amenities need to work hard. Clubhouses, fitness areas, co-working stations, playgrounds, parcel lockers, outdoor gathering areas, and on-site management spaces all affect resident experience and operating performance.
Good amenity planning begins with the households a community is intended to serve. Families, seniors, working residents, and residents with changing schedules may need different types of support from the same property.
Durability matters as much as design. Amenities should be maintainable, visible, accessible, and integrated into management and security planning.
The result is not excess. It is a more complete community that can support resident life over the long term.
